Have you ever wondered what is inside an e-cig? It’s not like they stuff a bunch of cigars into a blender to make the liquid you vape. Naturally, nicotine is a component, but it is mixed with a number of other ingredients to give a specific flavor to every different brand combination.
One of the major non-nicotine components of e-cigs is propylene glycol. This is a tasteless liquid that is used as a delivery agent for both the nicotine itself and the various flavoring agents used to give each individual type of e-cig its distinctive aroma and taste. Mix a vanillin, for example, with propylene glycol and you get a vape that tastes like vanilla. It is important to mix these ingredients together, so the minute quantities of the actual flavoring agents are evenly distributed by being in solution with the larger quantity of propylene glycol E liquid used to carry it.
Many smaller chemical firms now specialize in the two main fillers used. These are vegetable glycerin and the aforementioned propylene glycol e liquid. Depending on the amount of bite desired, one or the other will be used but generally not both. VG is a more viscous substance that produces less of a hit to the throat as opposed to PG. This in turn is preferred in e-cigs that have more taste to them and is less apt to clog up due to its relatively lesser viscosity.
Both products are considered to be extremely safe. The main difference is the plant-based chemistry of VG and the industry construct of PG.
