Why Brazing Over Welding for Metal-Joining?

Steel often needs to be joined without the associated cost or effort needed to produce a new mold and resultant metal piece. If you have two pieces of pipe that need to be joined in a way where simply introducing the right adhesive isn’t enough, you need a proper metal-joining process.

There are a lot of different ways to get that done, but two extremely common and effective processes are steel brazing services and welding services. Understanding the difference between these two, and which is best for your specific purposes can help you save a lot of costs, and choose a method that ultimately allows for much greater longevity for your needs.

In most cases, however, brazing is the ultimately better choice – and here’s why.

First of all, brazing doesn’t melt the base of the joints being added together, so it creates a much cleaner, and tighter joint. In fact, when done really professionally, the end result can look close to perfect.

Because of this, brazing does not need a second finish. All you need to do is use the right alloy – brass, which is copper and zinc, is extremely common and very effective for this purpose – and find the right steel brazing services to help you get the job done.

Furthermore, brazing even allows for the combination of steel with a different metal with a completely different melting point – or steel with a non-metal, like metalized ceramics.

Complex parts can also easily be brazed due to the control that the brazing process offers over the much cruder welding process.

Of course, it’s not always perfect. As per Machine Design, brazing is weaker than welding, meaning in cases where steel will be subjected to incredible amounts of pressure, it’s better to join steel with steel. Furthermore, brazed joints can be damaged under temperatures where steel in general feels comfortable. But unless you’re in an extremely heavy-duty industrial environment, brazing is usually the preferred service.
